What are needs?

Needs are the outcomes or goals your stakeholders care about achieving. They are the “why” behind the features you are considering. In Weivo, features are scored against needs to produce a ranked decision. Good needs are outcome-focused, not solution-focused. Instead of “build a mobile app,” a need might be “users can access the tool on the go.”

Adding a need

  1. Open your project and go to the Needs tab
  2. Click Add need (or the ”+” button)
  3. Enter a name and, optionally, a description that explains what the need means in context
  4. Save the need
You can add as many needs as your project requires. There is no enforced limit, but a focused set of 3 to 8 needs tends to produce the clearest analysis.

Editing a need

Click on any need to open its detail view. You can update the name, description, and any evidence or signal links you have attached.
You can attach URLs to a need as supporting evidence — for example, a customer interview note, a support ticket, or a data link. These do not affect scoring directly, but they make your decision report more credible when you share it.

Deleting a need

Open the need’s detail view and use the delete option. Deleting a need removes it from the analysis and from any stakeholder scores that referenced it. This action cannot be undone.

Tips

  • In weighted mode, each stakeholder rates how important each need is to them. The more clearly you define your needs, the easier it is for stakeholders to rate them accurately.
  • In allocation mode, needs represent strategic goals or themes. Name them at the program level (“Customer retention,” “Platform reliability”) rather than at the feature level.
