# Coverage

> Coverage is the grid of every feature against every need, rated 1 to 5 on how much the feature delivers the need. It is what turns votes into a ranking.

## What Coverage is

Coverage is the second of a Weighted project's two matrices. Voting records how much each stakeholder **wants** each need; Coverage records how much each feature **delivers** each need. The two share a scale and a shape so they read alike, with one difference on purpose: votes are drawn as dots, coverage as squares.

A feature's value is its coverage row weighted by how much each need matters. No coverage, no value: a feature linked to no need keeps every output locked until it is linked or removed.

Direct projects have no Coverage tab.

## The scale

| Score | Meaning |
| - | - |
| 1 | Touches it |
| 2 | Contributes |
| 3 | Partly delivers it |
| 4 | Largely delivers it |
| 5 | What it exists for |

Leave a cell empty when the feature has nothing to do with the need. Empty is not zero on a scale; it is "not linked", and the header meter counts how many features are linked to at least one need.

## Filling in the grid

The grid has a row per need, grouped by category, and a column per feature. Click a cell and pick a square from 1 to 5. Click the lit square again to clear it. Every click is saved as you go.

Coverage is the one place links are set, so every score is chosen beside the others for the same need. From the Features tab, a feature's **None - excluded** label and the **Link on Coverage** button in its edit form both open this grid with that feature highlighted.

## Suggestions from the assistant

When the [assistant](/ai-assistant) proposes a feature, it proposes coverage scores with it. Those scores land in the grid as **unconfirmed suggestions**, drawn with a dashed edge, and a line above the grid counts them. They already count toward the ranking. Click the lit square to keep a suggestion as your own, or pick another score to replace it. Editing a feature keeps its unconfirmed scores as long as they are unchanged.

## Reading the grid

* A **row with no squares** is a need nothing delivers. Either a feature is missing or the need does not belong in this cycle. The Needs tab shows the same thing as "No feature yet".
* A **column with one square** is a single-purpose feature; a column full of 5s is probably rated too generously, and Analysis will rank it accordingly.
* Groups are not in the grid. A group's children carry the coverage.

## Tips

* Rate coverage before looking at the votes. Knowing which needs stakeholders want most makes it tempting to rate coverage to match.
* Coverage is the PM's rating. Stakeholders never see or edit it; what they rate is the needs.
